2022 Atlantic Hurricane Outlook

This presentation will cover the following topic areas:
  • The definition of hurricanes and how to apply the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
  • Tropical cyclone climatology for the Atlantic Basin with a focus on New Jersey.  The term ‘tropical cyclone’ covers tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.
  • A review of the 2021 Hurricane Season in the Atlantic basin, with a focus on the high impact events for the United States.
  • The current 2022 Hurricane season forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • Service changes from the National Hurricane Center for the 2022 hurricane season
  • A review of the main impacts from a hurricane and the best sources of weather information for those various impacts.
  • Things to do before a hurricane threatens and things to do when a hurricane threat is active.

Presenter Bio: 
Gary Szatkowski - OurWeather US LLC Meteorologist

Gary Szatkowski began his career with the National Weather Service in 1980 after graduating from St. Louis University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology. Gary worked at duty stations for the National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Oklahoma City, OK, Washington, DC, and Mount Holly, NJ.

From 1997 to his retirement in 2016, Gary was the Meteorologist-in-Charge at the National Weather Service Office in Mt. Holly, NJ.  The Mt. Holly office provides weather forecast and warning services for the residents of New Jersey, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania and northeast Maryland. As Meteorologist-in-Charge at the Mt. Holly office, he was responsible for all products and services provided by that office.

Since 2016, Gary has continued to do consulting work in forensic meteorology, aviation meteorology, operational meteorology, and professional development training. He is an Officer of the Board for the New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Association.

He is a member of the American Meteorological Society, the National Weather Association, and the New Jersey Association for Floodplain Management.

Gary has been recognized as a ‘Hurricane Sandy Hero’ by the Newark Star-Ledger newspaper and received the Weather Hero Award for 2012 from the Weather Research Center for his work during Hurricane Sandy.

Gary received the 2017 Lifetime Achievement award from the New Jersey Association for Floodplain Management for 35+ years of dedicated public service providing technical expertise in weather forecasting and leadership in flood risk communication.

Those attending this and future NJAFM webinars who wish to receive a Continuing Education Credit (CEC) for CFM and/or Professional Development Hour (PDH) for NJPE must meet two requirements:
