Welcome to "Flooding Hazards and Floodplain Management"! This five-week online course will give you the background you need to help you understand flooding hazards and the regulations that govern building in a floodplain. Please read these instructions carefully so you are aware of the steps involved in ensuring you get credit for completion of the course.

The course is divided into 5 different modules:

    1. An Overview and Forces of Floods on Buildings
    2. Floodplain Mapping
    3. Design and Construction Standards
    4. Administration of a Local Floodplain Program
    5. NJ DEP Land Use Regulations and Other Resources

You will have 5-weeks to complete all the sections. You may do the course at your own pace (i.e. You can do it all in one day, over a few weeks period, or take all five weeks to complete it..you decide).

Each section consists of a Power Point Presentation (PDF or HTML depending on your internet connection speed) and a PDF notes page of that presentation that we encourage you to download to take notes on as you move through the modules.

Within the Power Points are weblinks that you should click on! These links are provided for you so that you may familiarize yourself with the web-based information and resources that are available.

At the end of each module you will be provided a weblink to a short quiz that will test the knowledge that you gained from that section. YOU MUST COMPLETE EACH OF THE QUIZES TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE! We encourage you to use your notes and the PDFs to assist you in answering the questions.

In order to receive credit for the course you must submit answers to all the web quizzes and the final course evaluation. We will notify you to confirm that you have successfully completed the course. Alternatively, we will also notify you if you have skipped one of the steps you need to ensure that you receive course credits

If at anytime during the course you have questions, please feel free to contact Lisa Auermuller at auermull@marine.rutgers.edu or at 609-812-0649 X 204.

Please click on the module that you wish to begin. We suggest that you go in the order that they are listed.

    1. An Overview and Forces of Floods on Buildings
    2. Floodplain Mapping
    3. Design and Construction Standards
    4. Administration of a Local Floodplain Program
    5. NJ DEP Land Use Regulations and Other Resources
